Florida Hospital and GE Healthcare Partners to build ‘command center’ to guide clinical operations

Florida Hospital and GE Healthcare Partners are working together to design and build a command center that will transform clinical operations at Florida Hospital locations across Central Florida. The high-tech center, the first of its kind in the region, will use predictive analytics to help hospital staff working to deliver quality, safe, and optimized clinical operations.

The command center will function like NASA’s mission control, but focused on constantly orchestrating patient care at nine Florida Hospital campuses in Orange, Seminole, and Osceola counties. Together, these hospitals handle more than 2,000,000 patient visits per year, making Florida Hospital one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems.

The command center’s Wall of Analytics leverages existing IT systems. The platform takes data from multiple systems and applies artificial intelligence algorithms to spot the “needle in the haystack” so staff can act to prioritize patient-care activities and discharges, make short-term staffing decisions, and mitigate potential bottlenecks before they occur.

Command-center technology has also been shown to reduce wait times, expediting needed patient care. And by using near real-time data, providers can streamline their processes in time-sensitive clinical situations.

Florida Hospital joins a growing ecosystem of such centers which includes The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and Humber River Hospital in Toronto.  Florida Hospital’s Command Center (FHCC) will achieve the distinction of being the largest health-care command center (square footage) supporting the largest number of beds and hospital campuses.  Analytic “tiles” in the FHCC will leverage learning from the other centers and break new ground in using artificial intelligence to constantly help caregivers.

“Florida Hospital prides itself on utilizing innovative technology to provide the best possible care for our patients. Our goal is to improve the patient experience, enabling caregivers to spend more time with their patients while making care decisions more easily and quickly,” said Daryl Tol, president & CEO of Florida Hospital and Adventist Health System’s Central Florida Division. “We are excited to partner with GE Healthcare Partners to bring this innovative concept to our care network.”

“Command Center staff using advanced analytics in a purpose-built space will help caregivers help patients, all the time. The combination of human and artificial intelligence is what’s so powerful,” added Jeff Terry, CEO of Command Centers for GE Healthcare. “Florida Hospital is so advanced in many ways. We’re honored for them to join GE’s command center community.”

The command center will be built in a centralized location to serve Florida Hospital operations across the region. It is expected to open in 2019.

Florida Hospital Celebration Health Expands Cardiology Services

Residents and visitors who need emergency cardiac care in the Celebration area now have more options close to home.

Florida Hospital Celebration Health recently launched vascular surgery and interventional cardiology services with two newly expanded and remodeled cardiac catheterization labs, where physicians can use a thin, flexible tube to check and repair the blood flow in coronary arteries.

That means patients suffering from conditions such as heart attacks, congenital heart defects, and disease affecting arteries or veins can be evaluated, diagnosed and treated in a single location. The catheterization labs started offering pacemaker services this week.

“There is immense growth in Central Florida, and with that comes the important need to provide advanced, life-saving cardiac care close to our patients’ homes,” said Dr. Duane Davis, director of the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute. “Our cardiac network will continue to grow along with our community.”

Osceola County’s population is expected to skyrocket over the next decade. The University of Florida’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research estimated 288,200 residents in Osceola in 2015, and that’s projected to climb nearly 24 percent to 358,700 by 2030. Surrounding Orange and Polk counties are also projected to experience notable growth.

The Celebration expansion is the latest of Florida Hospital’s growing cardiac services — a diagnostic cath lab opened at the new Florida Hospital Apopka in December, and before that, a cath lab opened at Florida Hospital Kissimmee. These join the established services at Florida Hospital Orlando, Altamonte, Winter Park and East Orlando campuses.

The Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute is one of the largest and best-regarded cardiac facilities in the country, and Florida Hospital is the only healthcare provider in Central Florida that performs heart transplants. Every year, the Cardiovascular Institute serves more than 70,000 cardiac patients, including 25,000 who seek emergency care and 2,000 who require cardiac surgery.

Florida Hospital Plans New Standalone EDs

Florida Hospital is launching a major expansion of services on the east side of Orlando, with standalone emergency departments planned for Waterford Lakes and Oviedo.

The Waterford Lakes emergency department will be located at Colonial Drive and Lake Pickett Road. Florida Hospital yesterday closed on the purchase of the 5-acre parcel where the emergency department will stand.

“We want to be where you live, with a complete network that’s easy to access. This will lead to steady growth in the coming years,” said Daryl Tol, president, and CEO of Florida Hospital and the Central Florida Division of Adventist Health System. “Our new centers in Oviedo and Waterford Lakes are just the next step in our aggressive multi-year plan.”

Both emergency departments are expected to include 24 beds, including observation beds allowing patients to stay close to home should they need advanced care not requiring admission to a hospital. Services offered will include: Diagnostic imaging (CT, MRI, X-ray), a full-service laboratory and pharmacy services. The comprehensive clinical team at the new EDs will include board-certified emergency physicians and emergency nurses trained in both adult and pediatric emergency medicine.

In Oviedo, the emergency department is slated to be built on Red Bug Lake Road near Oviedo Mall Boulevard, on a parcel already owned by Florida Hospital. The parcel also houses a Centra Care urgent-care office, which will remain on the site.

Final design decisions will be made after input from city government and residents.

Groundbreaking for the Waterford Lakes location is expected in June of this year, with the ED opening in the second quarter of 2019. Groundbreaking in Oviedo is set for this October, with the opening planned for the third quarter of 2019.

Florida Hospital Opens First NICU in Seminole County

Florida Hospital Altamonte is providing an important new service in Seminole County that will allow its tiniest and most vulnerable patients to get care closer to home.

On Tuesday, the hospital debuted its new Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which features 10 private rooms, and meets a growing need for critical care in Central Florida.

The rooms are equipped with Draeger’s Babyleo TN500 IncuWarmer, which uses groundbreaking technology to regulate body heat, maximize efficiency for clinical staff and integrate families in their babies’ care. The Babyleo also features low sound and light levels to create a womblike atmosphere and has advanced safeguards against infection. Its “kangaroo mode” allows parents to more closely interact with their baby.

The new NICU is part of Florida Hospital’s neonatal network of care that includes 150 beds throughout Central Florida (including units at Orlando, Winter Park, Celebration, Daytona Beach, and now Altamonte Springs). The NICU network allows patients to receive the highest level of care and includes a team of specialists who provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services, from minimally invasive surgery to highly complex cases, and innovative care and procedures.

Florida Hospital Earns Prestigious Award

Florida Hospital for Children has been named a Top Children’s Hospital by The Leapfrog Group.  This award is considered one of the most prestigious honors a hospital can receive.  Florida Hospital for Children is one of only ten children’s hospitals in the entire U.S. to earn this recognition.

In addition, Florida Hospital Celebration Health has been named a Top Teaching Hospital, one of only 36 in the country to get this distinction.

Performance across many areas of care is reviewed in establishing the qualifications for the award, including: infection rates, high-risk procedure outcomes, and the prevention of medical errors.  Hospitals must submit a Leapfrog Hospital Survey to be considered.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent hospital watchdog organization that reviews patient safety metrics in the industry.  Back in October, the organization gave every Florida Hospital campus in Central Florida an “A” grade for their commitment to patient care.

It takes a special person to be a nurse. One that cares. Extends unwavering compassion. Sacrifices for others. And at Florida Hospital, embodies the mission to heal the whole person — in body, mind, and spirit.

If you have ever wondered if you might be a “Florida Hospital nurse,” we have some ways to find out.

Florida Hospital Kissimmee Chief Nursing Officer Linda Cason explains five attributes that create the glow of a Florida Hospital Kissimmee nurse in some key clinical areas.

  1. A Florida Hospital Kissimmee nurse likes unique and challenging opportunities

Florida Hospital Kissimmee is a part of one of Central Florida’s largest networks of care. Located in the heart of one of the fastest growing communities in all of Florida, Florida Hospital Kissimmee’s campus is just minutes from major attractions, like Walt Disney World. At Florida Hospital Kissimmee, our team members are committed to each patient’s experience with a focus on exceptional clinical care.

Florida Hospital Kissimmee has unique and exciting opportunities within critical care, medical, surgical and emergency service lines for experienced and graduate nurses alike. There are also other nursing opportunities in the areas of our cardiac cath lab and our new comprehensive interventional radiology department.

Cason says, “Our staff frequently tell us that they love the family-oriented feel of this campus.” She adds, “Florida Hospital Kissimmee does feel like a family; we are large enough for our nurses to learn and grow within our campus, yet small enough to keep that close family feel. At Kissimmee, our staff values their work, which is the reason we have a world-class team!”

  1. A Florida Hospital Kissimmee nurse experiences many growth and development opportunities

Florida Hospital Kissimmee is a great learning environment where many nurses use their experiences as a stepping stone to advance their careers. They provide a unique new employee experience that focuses on onboarding and education, in addition to growth and development pathways.

Cason says, “Our nurses build a strong clinical foundation that will prepare them for future advancement at Florida Hospital Kissimmee and beyond.”

  1. A Florida Hospital Kissimmee nurse likes to be part of a team

Teamwork is the cornerstone of what makes a Florida Hospital nurse — and their patient care — exceptional. “There is a true team spirit and sense of collaboration within each of our units, as well as across the entire hospital. We work together to ensure that the day goes smoothly for everyone,” says Cason. “We care for each other like family.”

  1. A Florida Hospital Kissimmee nurse likes to uphold high standards, professionally and personally

Cason describes, “The mission of our hospital holds us to the highest standard in the care of our patients. We take great pride in ensuring that we meet the needs of our patients and their families – body, mind, and spirit. Our team considers it a privilege to have the skills, knowledge, and expertise to care for our patients in such a special way and to be able to positively impact the lives of those we serve.”

With the mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ, Florida Hospital Kissimmee nurses are committed to embracing this mission-based care for each patient’s body, mind, and spirit. “We are looking for nurses who respect our mission, and the spiritual needs of our patients and their fellow team members,” advises Cason.

She adds, “It’s a really unique culture at Florida Hospital, our nurses extend the same compassion and drive toward their teammates as they do their patients or anyone they come in contact with at the hospital.”

Some nurses pray with patients. If comfortable, you have the freedom to do this at Florida Hospital Kissimmee. As a 23-year employee of Florida Hospital, I believe in our mission and our work, and I am proud of the service that we are able to provide to our community,” shares Cason.

Florida Hospital Gets Report Card

Florida Hospital campuses in the Orlando metro area all received “A” grades in an elite national rating program which recognizes strong commitment to patient safety. The independent hospital watchdog The Leapfrog Group released the grades, which rate hospitals on errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.  Surveyors also consider a hospital system’s culture to prevent mishaps.

The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Hospital Safety Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.
